At Gomantium we know that car door seals —also called weather seals or weatherstrips— are small parts with a big job: keeping the interior protected from water, dust, and noise, while also improving thermal comfort. Here’s how to look after them and when to replace them.
Why is it important to take care of your car’s door seals?
- Water sealing: prevents leaks in the rain or at the car wash.
- Acoustic insulation: reduces wind and road noise.
- Thermal comfort: helps maintain interior temperature.
- Fewer vibrations and creaks: improves perceived quality while driving.
Wear signs: when to inspect or replace
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s time to act:
- Cracks, cuts, or loss of elasticity (rubber that’s hard or deformed).
- New wind noise while driving.
- Water or dust ingress inside the cabin.
- Doors that are harder to close or require more force.
How to keep door seals in good condition
1) Regular cleaning
Wipe the entire seal surface and the frame channel with a damp cloth and pH-neutral soap. Remove dust, mud, and any leftover shampoo after washes.
2) Conditioning and lubrication
Every 2–3 months, apply liquid petroleum jelly or a dedicated rubber protectant (avoid harsh mineral oils). This preserves elasticity and helps prevent cracking.
3) Weather protection
Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a sunshade. High temperatures and UV radiation accelerate ageing.
4) Quick post-wash check
Make sure there’s no shampoo or wax residue left in the door channel; over time, these can dry the rubber out.
What happens if you don’t replace them in time?
- Water ingress that can damage upholstery and electronics.
- More cabin noise and reduced comfort.
- Poorer door fitment and potential persistent creaks.
- Greater load on the HVAC system and higher energy use.
